Biography

Blessed Bernard Scammacca, also known as Bernard of Catania, was born into a wealthy and pious family in Catania, Sicily, in the year 1430. While he received a good education, Bernard led a dissolute and extravagant youth, indulging in revelry and careless behavior. However, his life took a significant turn when he was wounded in a duel and forced into a period of recovery.

During his healing process, Bernard experienced a profound spiritual transformation, recognizing the emptiness of his previous ways. Determined to change his life, he dedicated himself to the Christian faith and became deeply involved in the Church. In 1452, Bernard joined the Dominican Order in Catania, seeking a life of greater devotion and adherence to God's will.

Bernard's journey as a Dominican was marked by his exemplary charitable works and repentance for his earlier waywardness. He tirelessly followed the strict rules of his Order, finding solace and inspiration in contemplating Christ's Passion, which occasionally led to intense moments of ecstasy. His profound devotion to prayer and self-reflection became a testament to his unwavering commitment to the path of holiness.

Driven by his deep compassion for the suffering and marginalized, Bernard founded a hospital dedicated to serving the poor and the sick. His selfless acts of kindness and his nurturing nature made him a beloved figure among the communities he served.

While Bernard possessed exceptional oratory skills and was recognized as a gifted preacher, he had a particular affinity for the confessional and spiritual direction. Many sought his guidance, finding solace and wisdom in his profound understanding of the human condition and his unwavering commitment to helping others find their way towards salvation.

Notably, Bernard possessed the gift of prophecy, which he used to admonish and inspire individuals to amend their lives. He even prophesied the date of his own death, emphasizing his deep connection to the divine and his ability to discern God's will.

There are many tales and legends surrounding Bernard's life. It is said that while walking in the gardens of his monastery, birds would descend to sing to him, but they would cease their songs once he entered prayer. Additionally, a story tells of a porter who witnessed a radiant light emanating from under the door to Bernard's room. Upon peeking inside, the porter beheld a beautiful child illuminated with light, holding a book from which Bernard was reading.

Blessed Bernard Scammacca passed away on January 11, 1487, due to natural causes. Fifteen years after his death, he appeared in a vision to the prior in Catania, requesting that his remains be transferred to the monastery's rosary chapel. During this transfer, a man suffering from paralysis was miraculously cured upon touching the relics of Bernard.

The Catholic Church recognized the sanctity of Bernard's life and beatified him on January 11, 1825, during the pontificate of Pope Leo XII. His cultus, meaning the veneration and devotion of the faithful towards him, was confirmed at that time. Bernard of Catania continues to be commemorated on February 16 and is additionally celebrated by the Dominican Order on January 11.
