Biography

Blessed Ciril Montaner Fabré was born on 16 February 1873 in Vilanova i La Geltr√∫, Barcelona, Spain. He dedicated his life to the service of God as a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret.

On 7 March 1897, Ciril Montaner Fabré made his religious profession in Cervera, Spain, thus taking the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience in accordance with the Claretian charism. He displayed a deep commitment to his vocation and an unwavering faith.

After years of spiritual formation and diligent study, Ciril Montaner Fabré was ordained a priest on 29 June 1902. As a priest, he embarked on his mission to spread the Gospel and serve the faithful. His pastoral ministry was marked by a profound love for God and an ardent desire to help others grow in their faith.

However, during the tumultuous years of the Spanish Civil War, Ciril Montaner Fabré faced persecution and hostility due to his religious affiliation. His unyielding courage and steadfast dedication to his faith led to his martyrdom. On 28 November 1936, he was tragically killed in Montcada, Barcelona, Spain, sacrificing his life out of love for Christ.

Recognizing his heroic death and the virtues he exemplified throughout his life, Pope Francis declared Ciril Montaner Fabré venerable on 21 December 2016. This decree acknowledges his martyrdom and the imitation of Christ's self-sacrificial love that he demonstrated.

Proceeding further, on 21 October 2017, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Ciril Montaner Fabré in a solemn ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, representing the Holy Father. This important recognition of his sanctity encourages the faithful to seek his intercession and follow his inspiring example of faith and devotion.

Blessed Ciril Montaner Fabré is remembered and honored on his feast days, celebrated on 28 November, the day he attained martyrdom, as well as on 1 February, as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Spanish Civil War. On these occasions, the faithful gather to pray, thank God for his witness, and seek his intercession.

Blessed Ciril Montaner Fabré's life and martyrdom serve as a powerful reminder of the perseverance and strength found in the face of adversity. His story inspires believers to remain steadfast in their faith and be willing to stand up for the Gospel, even in the most challenging circumstances. The Church continues to venerate his memory and seek his intercession for all those in need.
