Biography

Blessed Constabilis of Cava, also known as Constabilis Gentilcore, Constabile, Costabile, or Constable, was a Benedictine monk under the guidance of Saint Leo at the Cava monastery in Salerno, Italy. He was born in the region of Lucania, Italy, in 1060.

Constabilis dedicated his life to the pursuit of spiritual knowledge and faithfully followed the Benedictine rule. His commitment and piety caught the attention of his mentor, Saint Leo, who recognized Constabilis' leadership qualities and appointed him as the abbot of Cava in the year 1122. As the abbot, Constabilis successfully nurtured a community of monks and fostered spiritual growth within the monastery.

One of Blessed Constabilis' notable contributions was the establishment of the town of Castelabbate around the Cava monastery. Recognizing the need to sustain and protect the monastery, he oversaw the construction and development of Castelabbate, creating a vibrant community that could support the religious activities of the monks.

Throughout his life, Blessed Constabilis lived a devout and exemplary existence, embodying the virtues of humility, piety, and dedication to God's work. He instilled these values in the community of monks under his care, leading them by example and guiding them towards spiritual enlightenment.

Blessed Constabilis' earthly journey concluded in the year 1124, when he passed away from natural causes. Following his death, he was interred in the church overlooking the grotto of Arsicia, a place of significant spiritual significance.

The memory of Blessed Constabilis of Cava lived on within the hearts of those who recognized his holiness. On December 21, 1893, Pope Leo XIII beatified him, formally acknowledging his sanctity and confirming the veneration of his cult.

Blessed Constabilis of Cava remains an inspirational figure, remembered for his dedication to the Benedictine order, his leadership as the abbot of Cava, and his role in the establishment of Castelabbate. His life continues to inspire believers to seek spiritual growth and emulate his virtues of humility and piety.
