Blessed Emilia Bicchieri

Biography

Blessed Emilia Bicchieri, also known as Emilia of Vercelli, was born in 1238 in Vercelli, Piedmont, Italy. She was one of seven daughters born into the prestigious Ghibelline patrician family of Pietro Bicchieri. Emilia exhibited a strong inclination towards religious life from an early age, retreating to her room for hours of prayer. Unfortunately, her mother passed away while Emilia was still a young girl, which led her father to become even more protective.

At first, Emilia's father objected to her desire to become a nun. However, as he came to understand and appreciate her true calling, he generously funded the construction of the Dominican monastery of Santa Margherita in Vercelli. At the age of 18, Emilia entered this abbey and embraced the life of a Dominican nun.

Throughout her time at Santa Margherita, Emilia's devotion to the Eucharist, the Passion, and the Blessed Virgin Mary remained steadfast. Her unwavering commitment to her faith led to her being repeatedly chosen by her fellow sisters to serve as prioress, the spiritual leader of the community. However, Emilia humbly declined these offers, choosing instead to immerse herself in menial domestic service for the benefit of her sisters.

It wasn't until 1273 that Emilia finally accepted the role of prioress. During her term as prioress, she exemplified an exceptional level of spiritual leadership, guiding her fellow nuns with love, wisdom, and humility. Her dedication to the spiritual and material well-being of the community was inspiring to all.

Blessed Emilia Bicchieri had a profound devotion to the Eucharist, recognizing it as the source and summit of her faith. She ardently believed in the real presence of Christ in the consecrated bread and wine and sought to instill this reverence in others.

Emilia's life was marked by deep prayer, self-sacrifice, and devotion to God. She nurtured a strong love for the Passion of Christ, constantly meditating on His suffering and offering her own sufferings in union with His. This unwavering dedication to Christ's sacrifice led her to a profound understanding of the redemptive power of His love.

On May 3, 1314, Blessed Emilia Bicchieri passed away in Vercelli. She was interred at the Santa Margherita abbey, which she had devotedly served throughout her life. Her relics were later enshrined in the cathedral of Vercelli, where they continue to be venerated today.

Blessed Emilia Bicchieri's holy and virtuous life has been an inspiration to many throughout the centuries. Her beatification took place on July 19, 1769, when Pope Clement XIV confirmed her cultus, recognizing her as a blessed within the Catholic Church.

Today, Blessed Emilia Bicchieri's example of selfless service, deep prayer, and devotion to the Eucharist continues to inspire individuals to grow in their faith, love for God, and dedication to their communities. She stands as a testament to the profound influence one person can have when wholly surrendering themselves to God's will.
