Biography

Blessed Fortunato Arias Sánchez, a Catholic priest in the diocese of Albacete, Spain, was born on 11 June 1892 in Almaciles, Granada, Spain. He dedicated his life to serving God and the Church, exemplifying great piety and devotion.

Ordained as a priest, Blessed Fortunato ministered to the faithful in the Diocese of Albacete. He was known for his deep faith, compassion, and commitment to his parishioners. Despite the challenges faced during a time of political unrest, he remained steadfast in his mission to spread the love and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Tragically, Father Fortunato Arias Sánchez became a victim of the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939. On 12 September 1936, he was martyred for his unwavering faith. Along with countless others who suffered persecution during this turbulent period, he endured great hardships and ultimately gave his life for his beliefs.

Recognizing his sacrifice, Pope Benedict XVI declared Father Fortunato Arias Sánchez venerable on 1 June 2007, issuing a decree of martyrdom that acknowledged his heroic witness to the Gospel. On 28 October 2007, in a solemn ceremony, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, bestowing upon him the title of Blessed.
