Biography

Blessed Gertrude Prosperi, also known as Sister Maria Luisa Angelica, was born on 19 August 1799 in Fogliano di Cascia, Perugia, Italy. She came from a wealthy and pious family, being the daughter of Dominic and Maria Diomedi. Baptized on the same day at the parish church of San Hippolytus in Fogliano di Cascia, she grew up with a deep faith that would greatly impact her life.

On 4 May 1820, Gertrude joined the Benedictines at the monastery of Sante Lucia di Trevi, taking the name Sister Maria Luisa Angelica. Her commitment to the religious life was remarkable, and she served in various roles within the monastery. She dedicated herself as a nurse, sacristan, camerlenga, and novice mistress, nurturing and guiding those around her.

In recognition of her exceptional qualities and leadership, Sister Maria Luisa was elected abbess on 1 October 1837, a position she faithfully carried out for the remainder of her life. During her time as abbess, she sought to revive the observance of the Rule of the Order within the community, fostering a deep sense of dedication and commitment among the sisters.

One of Blessed Gertrude's notable devotions was her profound love for Eucharistic adoration. She spent long hours in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, finding solace, strength, and inspiration in the presence of Christ. Through her devotion, many witnessed her deep spiritual insight and connection with the Divine.

Throughout her life, Gertrude experienced several mystical visions. She received visions of Christ carrying His cross, revealing to her the immense love and sacrifice that He made for humanity. She also received visions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and of Jesus appearing as a humble pilgrim. These mystical experiences profoundly shaped her spirituality and strengthened her faith.

Blessed Gertrude Prosperi passed away on 13 September 1847, in Trevi, Perugia, Italy, from natural causes. She was buried in the church of Santa Lucia in Trevi, where she had dedicated her life in service to God and her community.

Recognizing her profound holiness and virtue, Pope Benedict XVI declared her venerable on 1 July 2010, acknowledging her heroic virtues. This official recognition was followed by her beatification on 12 November 2012, also by Pope Benedict XVI. The beatification recognition was celebrated at the cathedral of Spoleto, Italy.

A notable miracle attributed to Blessed Gertrude's intercession involves the healing of Carla Arcangeli in Perugia, Italy. In February 1989, Carla was in a coma with extensive brain injury due to a cerebral arterial hemorrhage. However, through the prayers and the intercession of Blessed Gertrude, Carla experienced a remarkable and unexplained recovery, leading to her miraculous healing.

Blessed Gertrude Prosperi, or Sister Maria Luisa Angelica, remains a beacon of inspiration for all those seeking a profound and intimate relationship with God. Her devoted service, enduring faith, and mystical experiences stand as a testimony to the transformative power of prayer and the boundless love of Christ.
