Biography

Blessed Iacobus Gwon Sangyeon was born in Jinsan, Jeolla-do, South Korea, in 1751. He was a layman who lived during a challenging period in Korean history when Christianity was heavily persecuted. Despite the dangers, Iacobus embraced his faith and became an ardent follower of Christ.

As a devoted Catholic, Iacobus Gwon Sangyeon actively participated in the spreading of the Christian faith in Korea during the late 18th century. He played a significant role in supporting and assisting Catholic missionaries who were engaged in forming and nurturing the growing Catholic community in Korea.

Iacobus faced numerous hardships and dangers due to his steadfast belief in Catholicism. During this time, the Korean government implemented strict laws that sought to eradicate Christianity from the country. Christians faced intense persecution, including imprisonment, torture, and even death if they refused to renounce their faith.

Despite the risks involved, Iacobus Gwon Sangyeon fearlessly continued to practice his faith and support the Catholic mission. He became an influential figure within the Catholic community, known for his strong devotion and unwavering commitment to the Church. His dedication to Christ was evident in his daily life, serving as an example to others.

On December 8, 1791, Iacobus Gwon Sangyeon's faith was put to the ultimate test when he was martyred in Jeonju, Jeolla-do. He remained steadfast in his belief until the end, choosing to lay down his life rather than renounce his faith in Christ. His martyrdom served as a powerful testimony to his unwavering devotion and loyalty to the Catholic Church.

For many years, the memory of Iacobus Gwon Sangyeon and his sacrifice remained alive within the local Catholic community in Korea. His story and witness were recognized by Pope Francis, who venerated him on February 7, 2014, through a decree on martyrdom. Pope Francis further honored Iacobus by beatifying him on August 15, 2014.

Blessed Iacobus Gwon Sangyeon's courageous example continues to inspire and strengthen the faith of Catholics worldwide. His life reminds us of the importance of staying true to our beliefs, even when facing adversity. As a layman martyr in the apostolic vicariate of Korea, his memory serves as a testament to the faithfulness of the Korean Catholic Church and the resilience of its members during a time of intense persecution.
