Biography

Blessed Ivo of Chartres, also known as Yves or Yvo, was born around 1040 in Beauvais, France, to a noble family. He received his education in Paris and later pursued further studies at the renowned Abbey of Bec in Normandy. During his studies, he had the privilege of being a fellow student with the esteemed Saint Anselm of Canterbury, who would become a close friend and influential figure in his life.

After completing his education, Ivo became a teacher and demonstrated a keen intellect and profound understanding of theology and canon law. He was highly regarded and frequently consulted on matters related to these fields. Ivo's commitment to defending the purity of the Church and his strong opposition to simony, the purchase of ecclesiastical offices, earned him a reputation as a principled and righteous man.

In recognition of his capabilities, Ivo was appointed as the Prior at Saint Quentin in Beauvais around 1069. This position allowed him to further develop his pastoral skills and nurture the spiritual well-being of the faithful. However, his influence reached far beyond the confines of Saint Quentin, as his reputation as an exceptional scholar and leader grew.

Ivo's unwavering commitment to upholding the teachings of the Church led to his appointment as the Bishop of Chartres in 1090. His fearless opposition to King Philip I's attempt to abandon his marriage and enter into a new one in 1092 resulted in his imprisonment. Later, Pope Benedict XIV added him to the martyrology, further affirming his holiness and virtuous life. He is venerated as a model of alms-giving and is honored on December 23. Some calendars also commemorate his feast day on May 23.
