Blessed Josep Lluís Carrera Comas, also known as Brother Agapi, was a dedicated member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious congregation founded by St. John Baptist de La Salle, dedicated to the education of children, especially the poor. He was born on February 4, 1881, in Santa Coloma de Farners, a town located in the province of Girona, Spain.
From an early age, Josep Lluís showed a deep devotion to God and a strong desire to serve others. He entered the novitiate of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and made his religious profession, taking on the name Brother Agapi. As a member of this religious community, he dedicated his life to the education and spiritual formation of young people, particularly those in need.
During the tumultuous times of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Agapi's commitment to his faith and vocation became a source of great challenge and danger. The Brothers of the Christian Schools faced immense persecution due to their association with the Catholic Church, as religious institutions were targeted by anti-religious factions.
Brother Agapi faithfully remained at his post, providing education and spiritual guidance to his students in the face of increasing hostility. However, on December 9, 1936, Brother Agapi was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith. He was killed in Barcelona, Spain, where he had been serving as a teacher and mentor to countless young minds.
Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding his death, Brother Agapi's martyrdom serves as a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication to his mission. His courageous witness to the Gospel message of love and service earned him the veneration of the Catholic Church.
On June 22, 2004, Pope John Paul II declared Brother Agapi's martyrdom through a decree, acknowledging his sacrifice in defense of the Catholic faith. On October 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, recognizing his heroic virtue.
Blessed Josep Lluís Carrera Comas, or Brother Agapi, stands as an inspiring example of selflessness and devotion to one's faith.
