Biography
Blessed Juan José Martínez Romero, a Catholic martyr, was born on August 21, 1889, in Totana, Murcia, Spain. He dedicated his life to the service of God and became a priest in the diocese of Cartagena, Spain. Unfortunately, his life was cut short during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War.
During the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, Spain was divided by political and ideological conflicts. As a priest, Blessed Juan José Martínez Romero faced opposition due to his unwavering commitment to his faith. Despite the risks involved, he persevered in ministering to his parishioners, providing them with spiritual guidance and support.
Tragically, on January 31, 1937, Blessed Juan José Martínez Romero was martyred in his hometown of Totana, Murcia. He was executed because of his refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs. His courageous conviction in the face of persecution made him a symbol of faith and martyrdom.
In recognition of his unyielding devotion to Christ, Pope Francis declared him venerable on December 1, 2016, through a decree of martyrdom. This acknowledgment marked the first step towards his beatification. On November 11, 2017, in a solemn ceremony held at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain, Pope Francis presided over the beatification recognition of Blessed Juan José Martínez Romero.
The beatification ceremony was attended by numerous faithful, as well as the dignitaries of the Church. Notable among them were Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid. This occasion served to honor and celebrate the life and sacrifice of Blessed Juan José Martínez Romero, who bravely stood firm in his faith until his martyrdom.
