Biography

Blessed Lucien Galan, also known as Lucian or Luciano, was a member of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, a Catholic missionary organization. Born on 9 December 1921 in Golinhac, Aveyron, France, Lucien dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel and serving the people of China.

Ordained as a priest, Lucien embarked on his missionary work in China, specifically in the Xichang area of Sichuan province. He tirelessly worked to bring the message of Christ to the Chinese people, facing numerous challenges and obstacles in a foreign land.

In November 1950, Lucien's work was disrupted when he was unjustly imprisoned for his missionary activities. After enduring captivity for over a year, he was eventually exiled from China in January 1952. Lucien found refuge in Hong Kong, where he continued his dedication to the service of God and his fellow brothers and sisters.

In 1956, Lucien was reassigned to a mountainous region in Laos, a neighboring country of China. His selfless devotion and commitment to his ministry led him to replace Blessed René Dubroux in February 1960, after the latter had been tragically murdered the previous year.

Serving as the parish priest of Blessed Thomas Khampheuane Inthirath, Lucien dedicated himself to catechist training, instilling the teachings of the Catholic faith in the local community. Tragically, on 12 May 1968, during a journey to attend catechist training, Lucien and Blessed Thomas were mercilessly killed, martyred for their unwavering faith.

The legacy of Blessed Lucien Galan is one of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the spreading the Gospel. His life is a testament to the power of faith and the enduring love of God. Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared him venerable on 5 June 2015, and he was beatified on 11 December 2016, during a ceremony in Vientiane, Laos. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, acknowledging Lucien's heroic virtue and his ultimate sacrifice for the sake of his missionary work.

Blessed Lucien Galan's feast day is celebrated on 12 May, the day of his martyrdom, honoring his life and example as a faithful servant of God. His humility, devotion, and unwavering commitment continue to inspire Christians around the world, reminding us of the cost of discipleship and the importance of spreading God's love to all corners of the world.
