Biography

Blessed Marie Rose Durocher, also known as Eulalie Durocher, was born on 6 October 1811 in Saint Antoine-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada. She was the tenth of eleven children in her family. From a young age, Eulalie felt a profound calling to the religious life, but due to her frail health, she was initially unable to pursue this vocation.

Instead, Eulalie dedicated herself to serving God in a different capacity and became the housekeeper for her brother, Theophile, who was a priest at Beloeil. During this time, Canada was still a newly independent country, and the bishop faced difficulties in attracting European religious to emigrate. To address this issue, he founded new religious communities within the country.

Eulalie played a pivotal role in the establishment of one such community, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. The congregation's primary mission was to serve as teachers, providing education and guidance to the people of Canada. Inspired by her deep faith and desire to educate young minds, Eulalie joined the community and took the religious name Sister Marie Rose.

Sister Marie Rose dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her vocation, devoting her life to teaching and spreading the message of Christ's love. Her commitment to education was rooted in the belief that knowledge and faith were essential for personal and societal growth.

On 6 October 1849, at the age of 38, Blessed Marie Rose Durocher passed away in Longueuil, Quebec, Canada, due to natural causes. Her legacy as a compassionate educator and spiritual guide would endure long after her death.

Recognizing her exemplary life, Pope John Paul II declared Marie Rose Durocher venerable on 13 July 1979 and beatified her on 23 May 1982. Her feast day is celebrated on 6 October each year.
