Biography

Blessed Miguel Tiu Imul was a devout Catholic layman and martyr of the diocese of Quiché in Guatemala. He was born on September 5, 1941, in the town of La Montaña in Parraxtut, Sacapulas, Quiché. A dedicated and committed husband, Miguel Tiu Imul lived a life of faith and actively participated in the Catholic Church.

As a prominent figure in his community, Blessed Miguel Tiu Imul served as the Director of Catholic Action and fervently embraced his role as a catechist. His deep commitment to spreading the teachings of the Catholic Church made him highly respected among the faithful in his region. He worked tirelessly to impart the knowledge and wisdom of the Catholic faith to both children and adults alike.

Unfortunately, during this time, Guatemala was embroiled in a period of political unrest and violence. The government troops, in their pursuit of control, targeted individuals who were actively engaged in promoting social justice and defending the rights of the marginalized. Blessed Miguel Tiu Imul, being a fervent advocate for justice and peace, fell victim to this violence.

On October 31, 1991, in Parraxtut, Sacapulas, Quiché, Guatemala, Blessed Miguel Tiu Imul was brutally murdered by Guatemalan government troops. His unwavering faith, righteous dedication to the Catholic mission, and his martyrdom made him an eminent figure in the annals of Catholicism.

Blessed Miguel Tiu Imul's life of service and ultimate sacrifice resonated with the Catholic Church and its followers. His martyrdom was officially recognized and approved by Pope Francis on January 23, 2020, with a decree of martyrdom. This recognition acknowledged the profound nature of his sacrifice and the impact it had on the Church and society at large.

To honor his memory and commemorate his faithful witness, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Miguel Tiu Imul on April 23, 2021. The beatification ceremony was celebrated in Santa Cruz del Quiché, Guatemala, elevating him to the status of Blessed within the Catholic Church.

Today, Blessed Miguel Tiu Imul serves as an inspirational figure for Catholics around the world. His selflessness, dedication to the Church, and ultimate sacrifice for justice are a constant reminder of the importance of relentlessly promoting peace, social justice, and defending the rights of the oppressed. Blessed Miguel Tiu Imul's life stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the courage to stand up for what is right, even in times of great adversity.
