Biography

Blessed Narcís Simón Sala, also known as Narciso in Latin, was a devoted member of the Claretians and a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on March 9, 1908, in Fornells, a town in the province of Girona, Spain.

From an early age, Narcís demonstrated a deep spirituality and a strong commitment to his faith. He joined the Congregation of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly known as the Claretians, and embraced their mission to serve God and spread the Gospel. As a Claretian seminarian, Narcís dedicated himself to rigorous theological studies and spiritual formation.

Tragically, during the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, Narcís faced persecution for his religious beliefs. He bravely remained steadfast in his commitment to Christ despite the hostile environment. On October 19, 1936, at the young age of 28, he was martyred in Mas Claret, an estate located in Sant Pere dels Arquells in the province of Lleida, Spain.

Blessed Narcís Simón Sala, along with 109 other Spanish Claretian martyrs, is remembered and celebrated as a witness to the faith. Their courageous sacrifice during a time of profound social and political upheaval stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to their beliefs.

On December 21, 2016, Pope Francis officially recognized the martyrdom of Narcís Simón Sala, venerated him, and decreed him "Blessed." This significant acknowledgment by the Pope further solidifies Narcís' place within the Catholic Church.

On October 21, 2017, Pope Francis presided over the Beatification Mass for Narcís Simón Sala and the other Spanish Claretian martyrs at the grand Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The Beatification ceremony, led by Archbishop Angelo Amato, was a joyous occasion that gathered thousands of faithful Catholics to honor and give thanks for the martyrdom and witness of Blessed Narcís Simón Sala.

Today, Blessed Narcís Simón Sala serves as an inspiration to countless individuals for his unwavering faith and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his beliefs. His life continues to be a testament to the enduring power of faith, even in the face of adversity.
