Biography

Blessed Odoric of Pordenone, also known as Odoric Mattiussi, was born in 1285 in Villanova, Friuli, Italy. Inspired by his strong faith, he joined the Franciscans in 1300 and dedicated his life to serving God.

Blessed Odoric quickly gained recognition for his dedication and exceptional preaching skills. As a hermit and priest, he drew large crowds to his services in northern Italy. His powerful sermons touched the hearts of many, inspiring them to deepen their faith and commit to a life of virtue.

In 1316, Blessed Odoric embarked on an extraordinary missionary journey through the Near and Far East. Over the span of fourteen years, he traveled extensively, preaching the Gospel with great zeal and fervor. His mission took him to various regions, including Persia, China, Java, Ceylon, and Tibet.

One of the notable achievements of Blessed Odoric's missionary work was being the first European to reach the capital of the Dalai Lama in Tibet. His profound understanding of different cultures and ability to adapt allowed him to connect with the local people and spread the message of Christianity effectively. Through his preaching and miracles, he not only touched the lives of many but also left a lasting impact on the communities he encountered.

In China, Blessed Odoric's reputation as a miracle worker grew, and his presence was welcomed with great reverence. His miracles ranged from healing the sick to calming storms, which further solidified his reputation as a holy man.

Tragically, on his journey back to Avignon, France, to report his findings to the Pope, Blessed Odoric passed away on 14 January 1331 in Udine, Italy, succumbing to natural causes. Despite his untimely death, his legacy lived on through the written accounts of his travels, which served as a valuable manual for geographers of his time. His detailed descriptions not only enriched geographical knowledge but also provided insights into the diverse cultures he encountered during his journeys.

Blessed Odoric of Pordenone's holiness and dedication to spreading the Gospel led to his beatification. On 2 July 1775, Pope Pius VI confirmed the cultus or devotion to Blessed Odoric, recognizing him as a source of inspiration and intercession for the faithful.

Today, Blessed Odoric is honored on 14 January and 3 February on some calendars as a reminder of his exemplary life and his contributions to the missionary work of the Church. His life remains an inspiration for all who seek to selflessly serve God and witness to the message of Christ.
