Biography

Blessed Rafael Lluch Garín, also known as "Raphael," was a young layman who hailed from the archdiocese of Valencia, Spain. He was born on 18th February 1917 in Valencia. From an early age, Rafael demonstrated a deep devotion to his faith and a strong commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

As a member of the Association of the Sons of Mary of the Miraculous Medal, Rafael actively participated in various spiritual and charitable activities. This association, founded in 1881 by Saint Catherine Labouré, aimed to spread devotion to the Miraculous Medal and assist the poor and marginalized members of society.

Rafael's life took a tragic turn during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War. Amidst the religious persecution and social unrest, he remained firm in his faith and his dedication to the Church. Recognizing the need to protect the religious freedom of the Catholic community, Rafael fearlessly defended his beliefs in the face of threats and hostility. Despite the imminent danger, he refused to renounce his faith and remained steadfast in his commitment to Christ.

Tragically, on 12th October 1936, in the town of Silla, Valencia, Rafael Lluch Garín was martyred for his unwavering faith. He became one of the countless victims who lost their lives during the Spanish Civil War due to their allegiance to the Catholic Church. His courageous testimony and sacrifice symbolized the unwavering devotion of the Spanish faithful during this dark period of history.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Blessed Rafael Lluch Garín venerable on 1st December 2016. The process of beatification followed, and on 11th November 2017, the Holy Father elevated him to the rank of Blessed during a special ceremony held at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid, honoring the exemplary faith and martyrdom of Blessed Rafael Lluch Garín.
