Biography

Blessed Santiago Meseguer Burillo, also known as Blessed Santiago of Híjar, was a Dominican priest who was born on 1 May 1885 in Híjar, Teruel, Spain. He professed in the Dominican Order on 9 April 1901 and dedicated his life to serving God and his people.

After his profession, Blessed Santiago Meseguer Burillo had the opportunity to teach theology in various convents and the seminary in Valencia, Spain. His passion for knowledge and his gift of teaching allowed him to guide and inspire numerous seminarians and future priests.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, which occurred from 1936 to 1939, Blessed Santiago faced immense challenges and persecution due to his religious beliefs. Despite the dangers, he remained steadfast in his faith and his commitment to serve others.

Tragically, on 25 November 1936, Blessed Santiago Meseguer Burillo was martyred in his birthplace of Híjar, Teruel, Spain. He bravely endured persecution and gave his life for the sake of his faith and the Catholic Church. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication to God and his Church.

The heroic virtues and sacrifices of Blessed Santiago did not go unnoticed. On 20 December 1999, Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom, officially recognizing his martyrdom and his exemplary Christian life. The Holy Father beatified him on 11 March 2001, acknowledging his sanctity and the profound impact he had on those who knew him.
