Blessed Simon Ballachi

Biography

Blessed Simon Ballachi, born around 1240 in Santarcangelo di Romagna, Italy, was raised in a noble family as the son of Count Ballachi. He came from a lineage with a strong connection to the Church, as two of his uncles had become archbishops of Rimini, Italy, and his younger brother was ordained as a priest.

From an early age, Simon's path seemed set for him as he received training in both military affairs and administration. As the eldest son, he was expected to inherit and manage the family estates. However, driven by a strong spiritual calling and against his family's wishes, he made the bold decision to join the Dominican Order as a lay-brother when he was 27 years old.

Upon entering the Dominican Order, Simon was assigned the duty of working in the garden of his friary. Despite his lack of prior knowledge in the field, he discovered an immediate love and affinity for this task. Simon approached his work in the garden with a deep sense of devotion, seeing God's presence in every aspect of nature and constantly offering prayers throughout his labor.

Renowned for his simplicity, strict adherence to the Dominican Rule, and exceptional skills as a catechist, Simon had a strong influence on children he worked with. His dedication to imparting the teachings of the Church was widely acknowledged, and he became known for his excellence in catechism.

Throughout his life, Simon experienced several remarkable encounters with spiritual beings. He was visited by the devil, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Saint Dominic de Guzman, Saint Peter Martyr, and the Blessed Virgin Mary. These extraordinary occurrences were witnessed by other friars who observed Simon's cell glowing and heard angelic voices surrounding him.

In his later years, Simon faced a significant challenge when he became blinded at the age of 57. Despite this handicap, he never lost hope or despaired, viewing his blindness as an opportunity for increased dedication to prayer. Simon utilized his extended periods of free time for deep contemplation and spiritual communion.

Blessed Simon Ballachi passed away on 5th November 1319 in Rimini, Italy, due to natural causes. Having lived a life deeply rooted in faith and dedicated to the Dominican Order, his exemplary character and holiness were recognized. He was beatified in 1817, with his cultus confirmed by Pope Pius VII on 14th March 1820.

Blessed Simon Ballachi is remembered and celebrated on his feast day, which falls on the 3rd of November. His life serves as an inspiration for embracing simplicity, finding God in all things, and unwavering commitment to prayer and the teachings of the Church.
