Biography

Blessed Simon of Cascia Fidati, also known as Simon Fidati or Simon of Cassia, was born around 1295 in Cascia, Italy. As a young man, he joined the Augustinian Hermits, where he devoted himself to the pursuit of knowledge. Initially, his studies focused on the natural sciences and philosophy. However, as he grew older, Simon became increasingly drawn to matters of faith, theology, and Bible scholarship.

Ordained as a priest, Simon possessed a deep understanding of Christian teachings and spirituality. Although he preferred a life of solitude, prayer, and study, his natural inclination for leadership led others to seek his guidance. Through his preaching, writing, and spiritual counsel, Simon had a profound impact on the lives of many who sought to live a more faithful and Christian existence.

Throughout his life, Blessed Simon of Cascia Fidati exhibited a humble disposition, avoiding positions of authority despite his remarkable wisdom and knowledge. Instead, he dedicated himself to serving others through his words and actions. Simon's unwavering commitment to his faith and the pursuit of holiness brought him great respect and admiration from those who crossed his path.

Tragically, during a plague epidemic, Simon Fidati passed away on 2 February 1348 in Florence, Tuscany, Italy. His relics now rest in the church of Saint Augustine in Cascia, as well as in the crypt chapel of the Basilica of Saint Rita in Cascia, where they are venerated by the faithful.

The extraordinary life and virtues of Blessed Simon of Cascia Fidati did not go unnoticed within the Catholic Church. In 1833, he was beatified by Pope Gregory XVI, recognizing his exemplary holiness and dedication to God. As a revered figure within the Augustinian Order, his feast days are celebrated on 2 February and 16 February.
