Blessed Thomas Hélye

Biography

Blessed Thomas Hélye, also known as Thomas of Biville, was born in the early 13th century in the village of Biville, Normandy, France. He was the son of Elias and Matilda Hélye.

Thomas dedicated his life to the service of God from a young age. He began his career as a school teacher and tutor in Biville, and later in Cherbourg, France, where he established and ran a school. Known for his piety and devotion, he would often fast several days a week, setting an example of austere living.

In his quest for spiritual growth and knowledge, Thomas embarked on a pilgrimage to Rome, Italy. This journey deepened his faith and enriched his understanding of the Catholic Church. Upon his return, he pursued theological studies in Paris, where he was eventually ordained as a priest around the year 1236.

As a priest, Thomas devoted himself to the mission of spreading the Gospel and ministering to the faithful in the diocese of Avranches and Coutances, France. Known for his tireless work, he would spend his days preaching and ministering to the needs of the people, while his nights were dedicated to prayer and penance.

One of the central aspects of Thomas's spirituality was his intense devotion to the Eucharist. He ardently believed in the Real Presence of Christ in the sacrament and fervently promoted adoration and reverence for the Blessed Sacrament.

Blessed Thomas Hélye passed away on October 19, 1257, in his hometown of Biville, Normandy, France, at the age of approximately 50. He died of natural causes and was laid to rest in a chapel within the parish church of Biville.

Unfortunately, during the persecutions of the French Revolution in 1794, his relics had to be hidden to prevent their destruction. Despite not having been officially canonized, Thomas Hélye is venerated as a blessed in local devotion, revering his holy life and spiritual legacy.

Blessed Thomas Hélye serves as an inspiring example of a dedicated priest, teacher, and evangelist who tirelessly pursued holiness and shared the love of God with those he encountered.
