Biography

Blessed Trigidia of Oña, also known as Trigidia of Castiglia or Trigidia of Castile, was born to the Spanish nobility, the daughter of Sancho García, Count of Castile, and Donna Urraca. She was born in an unknown year, and her exact birthdate is not recorded.

From an early age, Trigidia felt a strong calling to religious life and dedicated herself to God. In approximately 1011, while still in her teens, she entered the Benedictine order and joined the double monastery of San Salvador in Oña, Spain. This monastery had been founded by her father and was led by her aunt, Abbess Oñeca, who played a significant role in shaping Trigidia's spiritual journey.

Trigidia's devotion and piety were quickly recognized by her fellow sisters and the wider community. She was admired for her strong faith, her personal holiness, and her deep connection to the Divine. It is reported that she possessed a reputation as a miracle worker, with several inscriptions around the abbey and evidence from her burial attesting to this fact. Unfortunately, no detailed accounts or written records of her life or specific miracles have survived.

Trigidia's dedication and commitment to her vocation led her to be appointed as the second abbess of the San Salvador monastery, following in the footsteps of her aunt. During her tenure as abbess, she provided spiritual guidance and leadership to the community of nuns, nurturing their spiritual growth and fostering an atmosphere of prayer and contemplation.

Blessed Trigidia lived a life devoted to prayer, self-sacrifice, and serving others. She demonstrated profound humility, always placing the needs of others before her own. Her deep love for God and her fellow sisters inspired many to seek her intercession and guidance.

After a life well-lived in service of God, Trigidia passed away approximately in the year 1027, at the San Salvador abbey in Oña, Spain. She died of natural causes and was laid to rest in the Holy Christ chapel, a sacred area of the monastery typically reserved for individuals recognized for their miraculous works.

Today, the relics of Blessed Trigidia of Oña are enshrined at the Saint √çñigo altar, a place of veneration within the monastery. Her feast day is celebrated on the 22nd of November at the Holy Trinity abbey in Oña, Spain, where she is fondly remembered and honored for her exemplary life of faith and devotion.
