Maria Aikenhead

Life

Founder of the Institute of the Sisters of Charity in Ireland; she found herself working in a historical context in which Catholics, especially because of certain laws enacted by the English government, suffered restrictions and discrimination, particularly in health care, where private care was inaccessible to the poor. She placed herself at the service of the destitute.
