María de Jesús y del Espino was born in Hoyos del Espino (Ávila) in 1589 and died in the odor of sanctity at the Monastery of the Mother of God in Piedrahíta (Ávila) on 22 January 1662. She was a Spanish mystic of the seventeenth-century ascetic Carmelite school.
