Biografía

Blessed Acacio Calleja Santamaría, also known as Brother Acacio María, was born on May 7, 1915, in Yudego, Burgos, Spain. At the tender age of 2 days, he was baptized and thus began his lifelong journey of faith. Acacio was a member of the Congregation of Saint Peter ad Vincula and made his religious profession in 1934 in Marseille, France.

Acacio's desire for knowledge led him to pursue his studies in humanities and philosophy in Barcelona, Spain. During his time as a student, he showcased a deep love for his vocation and a genuine care for the students he taught, exemplifying his dedication to both education and the Catholic faith.

Tragically, the Spanish Civil War unfolded in the 1930s, a period marked by severe persecution of Catholics. Acacio, unwavering in his commitment to Christ, became a victim of this religious persecution. On February 15, 1937, in Barcelona, Spain, he was martyred for his faith and met a tragic end.

Recognizing his sacrifice and the holiness of his life, Pope Francis declared Acacio Calleja Santamaría as blessed on November 10, 2018. The beatification ceremony took place in the grand Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, an event presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu.

Acacio's brief but impactful life serves as an inspiration to believers around the world. His unwavering faith and dedication to his vocation in the face of persecution exemplify the values and virtues upheld by the Catholic Church. As a young martyr, Acacio is remembered for his deep love for God, his commitment to teaching, and his ultimate sacrifice for the faith.
