Early life
Edvige Carboni was born at Pozzomaggiore (Sassari) on 2 May 1880 into a family of faith with four other children.[1] On the day of her birth, the room in which the labour was taking place was lit up by a sphere of light, and the newborn bore on her chest a strange birthmark in the form of a cross.[1] From childhood she met her guardian angel, who told her how much God wanted her wholly for himself, and at 5 she consecrated herself entirely to him with a vow of chastity.[1] She had to leave school in the fourth year of elementary school.[1]
Family and vocation
When her mother died in 1910, at 30 she had to take the whole family on her shoulders; she had wished to enter the Figlie di San Vincenzo, but the conditions of her life did not allow it, and she cared for an aunt, an uncle, her grandmother, and finally a sister and her father, with whom she moved to Rome.[1] At her first communion, when she told her confessor of her intention to enter a convent, he had said that assisting her family was also serving the Lord, and she worked as an embroiderer to keep her brothers at their studies.[1] She served as catechist, cleaned the parish church, assisted the poor and the sick, and entered the Terz'Ordine Francescano.[1]
Mystical life
When phenomena of levitation and bilocation began, and she was seen to fall into trance, motionless for hours in church, many were afraid, or envious.[1] On 14 July 1911 Jesus spoke to her from the cross and told her she would have to suffer still more, and she received the stigmata, which she hid, though the stains showed when the wounds bled.[1] In 1925 she was subjected to a canonical process.[1] She lived in the period of the two world wars and of the atheist communist revolution in Russia, and began to help the young widows of the war and future brides without a dowry.[1] The Madonna, who in the meantime had appeared to the three shepherd children of Fatima, asked her to pray the Rosary and to offer herself for the consecration of Russia.[1]
Death and recognition
She died suddenly on 17 February 1952; on the occasion of her beatification her remains were moved to the church of San Giorgio Martire at Pozzomaggiore.[1] She was beatified by Pope Francis on 15 June 2019.[1]
