Biografía

Blessed Emilia Fernández Rodríguez De Cortés, also known as Emilia De Cortés, was a married lay woman born on April 13, 1914, in Tíjola, Almería, Spain. She lived during a tumultuous period in Spanish history, the Spanish Civil War, which deeply affected the lives of many individuals, including herself.

Emilia embraced her faith and lived a devout Christian life within the diocese of Almería. She was known for her unwavering dedication to God and her commitment to her family. As a married woman, she demonstrated profound love and care for her husband and children, reflecting the virtues of a holy family life.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Emilia and her family faced persecution due to their Catholic faith. Despite this threat, Emilia remained steadfast in her religious convictions and actively practiced her faith, even amidst the prevailing hostility towards the Catholic Church at that time.

During the war, Emilia, along with her husband and children, faced immense hardships and danger. Eventually, she was captured and held prisoner at the Gachas-Colorás prison in Almería. It was in this prison that she endured great suffering, believing in the power of her faith to sustain her through challenging times.

On January 25, 1939, Emilia Fernández Rodríguez De Cortés was martyred, paying the ultimate price for her unwavering commitment to Christ. She embraced her martyrdom as a testament to her faith, fully aware of the consequences of standing firm in her religious beliefs in a time of turmoil and persecution.

Emilia's courageous witness to her faith did not go unnoticed. On June 14, 2016, Pope Francis formally recognized her martyrdom through a decree, acknowledging her heroic virtues and sacrifice. Then, on March 25, 2017, Pope Francis beatified Emilia Fernández Rodríguez De Cortés, elevating her to the status of Blessed.

The beatification ceremony took place in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato. The event was a celebration of Emilia's unwavering commitment to Christ, her example of virtuous living, and her ultimate sacrifice for her faith.

Blessed Emilia Fernández Rodríguez De Cortés continues to inspire many with her profound witness to the Christian faith and her unwavering dedication to God, even in the face of great adversity. She serves as a shining example of courage, devotion, and martyrdom, reminding us of the tremendous sacrifices made by faithful individuals throughout history.
