Biografía

Blessed Francesc Castellsareny, also known as Francesc Castells i Brenuy, was born on 31 July 1876 in Pobla de Segur, Pallars JussÖ, Lleida, Spain. While we have no information about his birth parents, we do know that Francesc was adopted and took on the name of his adoptive parents.

Francesc demonstrated a strong calling to the priesthood from a young age and pursued his studies at the seminary of the diocese of Urgell in Spain. After years of dedicated study and spiritual formation, he was ordained as a priest on 21 December 1889, embracing his vocation with great devotion and enthusiasm.

Throughout his ministry, Blessed Francesc Castellsareny served in various roles. He started as a coadjutor in several parishes, providing pastoral care and assistance to the faithful. His commitment and dedication to his parishioners did not go unnoticed, and he was eventually appointed as the parish priest of Vilanova de La Aguda and Tiurana.

Tragically, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Francesc fell victim to the brutal persecutions against Catholic clergy. On 21 July 1936, he was arrested and imprisoned in Linola prison, enduring excruciating days of torture. Miraculously, he was released on 31 July, but his freedom was short-lived.

Francesc was once again captured on 13 August and ultimately martyred for his faith. He was shot at the gate of the cemetery at SalÖs de Pallars, Pallars JussÖ, Lleida, Spain. His martyrdom stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to Christ and the Gospel, even in the face of immense suffering and persecution.

Recognizing his heroic virtues and martyrdom, Blessed Francesc Castellsareny was venerated by Pope John Paul II on 19 April 2004, with a decree of martyrdom. He was later beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on 29 October 2005, with the recognition celebrated by Cardinal Saraiva Martins at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Italy.

Blessed Francesc Castellsareny's life serves as an inspiration to all who strive to follow Christ faithfully, even in the midst of adversity. His memory and intercession continue to be cherished by the faithful, particularly on his feast day, which is observed on 13 August.
