Beato Jacques Laigneau De Langellerie

Blessed Jacques Laigneau De Langellerie, also known as Jacques Laigneau, was a priest of the diocese of Angers, France. He was born on 17 April 1747 in La Flèche, Sarthe, France, into a devout Catholic family. From an early age, Jacques showed a deep devotion to God and a strong desire to serve the Church.

After completing his primary education, Jacques enrolled in seminary and was ordained a priest for the diocese of Angers. Known for his piety, humility, and dedication to the sacraments, he tirelessly worked to serve the spiritual needs of his parishioners.

However, during the tumultuous era of the French Revolution, the Catholic Church faced severe persecution as the revolutionary government aimed to eradicate its influence. Despite the danger, Jacques remained steadfast in his faith and committed himself to ministering to the faithful, often in secret. He fearlessly continued to celebrate Mass, administer the sacraments, and provide spiritual guidance to those in need.

Sadly, Jacques Laigneau's zealous dedication to his faith ultimately led to his martyrdom. On 14 October 1794, in Angers, Maine-et-Loire, France, he was captured by revolutionary forces and sentenced to death for his refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs. With unwavering faith and courage, Jacques accepted his fate and was executed for his commitment to Christ and the Church.

Recognizing his heroic virtues and sacrifice, Pope John Paul II declared Jacques Laigneau De Langellerie a martyr on 9 June 1983. His beatification took place on 19 February 1984 in Rome, Italy, where he was officially honored as Blessed Jacques Laigneau De Langellerie, a shining example of fidelity and courage during a time of great persecution.

Blessed Jacques Laigneau De Langellerie's feast day is celebrated on 14 October, marking the day of his martyrdom. He is also commemorated on 2 January as one of the Martyrs of Anjou, collectively remembering those who gave their lives for the faith in the region of Anjou.
