Beata
Beata María Adeodata Pisani
Benedictine nun and abbess of the Monastero di San Pietro, Naples and Malta, 1806-1855
Early life
Maria Adeodata Pisani, in the world Maria Teresa, lived a fairly short life, from 29 December 1806 to 25 February 1855.[1] She was born at Naples, where she remained until the age of 19, when she went to Malta, the country of origin of her father, the Barone Pisani.[1] She was raised by her paternal grandmother and, at 10, when the grandmother died, was placed in a college, where she received a Christian education.[1] For a little more than two years, at Notabile (now Medina) in Malta, she lived very quietly.[1]
Religious life
At 22 she entered the Monastero di San Pietro of the Suore Benedettine, which she knew well because it was near her home, and only eight days after her entry the mistress of novices called her to help in the spiritual instruction of the boarders.[1] After a year she began the novitiate, and on 8 March 1830 she made her solemn religious profession.[1] Though she never sought offices, in the 25 years after her profession she held practically all of them: three times sacristan and infirmarian, and also portress, an office she used to meet and help the poor, whom with authorisation she gathered and catechised.[1] On 30 June 1847 she was elected mistress of novices for the first time, an office she held until 30 June 1851, when she was elected abbess.[1] In the two years of her office she introduced no novelties; elected Discreta on 30 June 1853, she could not complete this last charge because of her health, never particularly good, and because of her penances and fasts.[1]
Death and recognition
She died on 25 February 1855.[1] The process began in 1893 but was interrupted from 1913 to 1989 for economic reasons; the miracle attributed to her dates from 1897 and concerns the healing of Madre Maria Giuseppina Damiani, at the time abbess of the Benedictine monastery of Subiaco.[1] She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 9 May 2001.[1]
