Beata Mariam Vattalil

Blessed Mariam Vattalil, also known as Sister Rani Maria and Regina Maria Vattalil, was born on 29 January 1954 in Pulluvazhy, Ernakulam, India. She was the second child of Paily and Eliswa of Vattalil. At the tender age of seven days, Mariam was baptized in the church of Saint Thomas.

As she grew up, Mariam felt a strong calling to dedicate her life to serving God and helping those in need. Following this calling, she joined the Franciscan Clarist Congregation and took the name Sister Rani Maria. On 22 May 1980, she made her solemn vows, committing herself fully to the service of God and the Church.

Sister Rani Maria was assigned as a missionary in the diocese of Bijnor, located in Uttar Pradesh, India. It was here that she began her remarkable work among the poor and marginalized. Her primary focus was to support and uplift those who suffered due to the oppressive practices of money lenders, landlords, and criminals who exploited them.

Sister Rani Maria fearlessly confronted the injustices and stood up against the powerful oppressors, fighting for the rights and dignity of the poor. Her selflessness and determination gained admiration and respect from those she served, but also drew the ire of those who profited from the exploitation of the vulnerable.

Tragically, on 25 February 1995, Sister Rani Maria was brutally murdered while traveling on a bus near Udainagar, Bagli, Dewas, India. This horrific act was an attempt to silence her and halt her work with the poor. The person responsible for her murder was Samandar Singh, who stabbed and beat her to death.

Samandar Singh was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to life imprisonment for his heinous crime. However, the remarkable story of forgiveness and reconciliation took an unexpected turn when Sister Rani Maria's family extended forgiveness to Singh. He was released in 2006 and attended the beatification celebration, where he was forgiven by Blessed Mariam's family.

It is believed that Sister Rani Maria's deep faith and unwavering commitment to serving others were recognized by the Vatican, resulting in her beatification. On 4 November 2017, Pope Francis declared her as Blessed Mariam Vattalil. The beatification recognition was celebrated at the Saint Paul Institute of Professional Studies in Indore, India, with Cardinal Angelo Amato serving as the chief celebrant.

Blessed Mariam Vattalil's life remains a powerful testament to the transformative power of love, forgiveness, and selfless service. Her martyrdom serves as an inspiration for all those seeking to follow in her footsteps, dedicating their lives to the service of God and their fellow human beings. Her feast day is celebrated on 25 February, commemorating the day she laid down her life for the pursuit of justice and the well-being of the marginalized.
