He exhibited great devotion and love for his parishioners, providing spiritual guidance and support to those in need. His deep faith and commitment to his ministry earned him respect and admiration among the faithful.

Unfortunately, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, which raged from 1936 to 1939, religious persecution became rampant. As a result, many priests and religious figures were targeted and martyred for their beliefs. Blessed Mateo Despóns Tena was among those who faced persecution for his unwavering dedication to his faith.

Tragically, on August 13, 1936, Blessed Mateo was martyred in Maestrazgo, Castellón, Spain. His unwavering commitment to his religious calling led to his ultimate sacrifice, as he refused to renounce his faith in the face of hostility and persecution.

Recognizing the sanctity and martyrdom of Blessed Mateo Despóns Tena, the Catholic Church officially venerated him on March 27, 2013, following a decree by Pope Francis.
