Beato Nicolás Bunkerd Kitbamrung

Blessed Nicholas Bunkerd Kitbamrung, also known as Benedikto Chunkim, Benedikto Xunkim, Nicholas Bunker Kitbamrung, Nikholas Buykoet Krisbamrung, and Nikola Bunkerd Kitbamrung, was born on February 28, 1895, in Sam Phran, Nakhon Pathom, Thailand. He was one of six children born to his parents, who were converts to Christianity.

Nicholas was raised in a devout Christian household and developed a strong faith from a young age. Recognizing his calling to the priesthood, he entered the Hang Xan Minor Seminary at the age of 13, where he received a solid foundation in his spiritual formation. His studies continued at the Penang Major Seminary in Malaysia, where he further deepened his understanding of theology and pastoral work.

In 1926, Nicholas was ordained to the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Bangkok, Thailand. He began his ministry as a pastor at Bang Nok Khneuk and later served in Phitsanulok. However, his missionary zeal led him to embrace a new chapter in his life as he embarked on a mission to northern Vietnam in 1930.

During his mission in Vietnam, Nicholas tirelessly worked to bring back Catholics who had fallen away from their practice due to poverty and various hardships. He demonstrated great compassion and dedication, earning the respect and admiration of the local community.

Sadly, war erupted between France and Indochina, and Nicholas was unjustly accused of spying for the French. In 1941, he was arrested and sentenced to ten years in prison. His time in prison was marked by immense suffering, not only from the conditions of the confinement but also from the worsening of his health. Nicholas contracted tuberculosis, which eventually took his life.

Despite his own physical struggles, Nicholas never wavered in his commitment to his faith. During his two years in prison, he sought to bring the hope of the Gospel to his fellow prisoners. Remarkably, he managed to baptize at least 68 individuals, who desired to embrace Christianity. Nicholas's unwavering faith and selfless actions behind bars touched the lives of many within the prison walls.

Ultimately, on January 12, 1944, Nicholas Bunkerd Kitbamrung succumbed to tuberculosis and passed away in Bangkok, Thailand. His death marked the loss of a courageous and devoted priest, who demonstrated unwavering faith and service until his final breath.

Recognizing Nicholas's incredible witness and martyrdom, Pope John Paul II declared him as Thailand's first martyr priest. On January 27, 2000, the Pope issued a decree regarding his martyrdom, venerated him, and on March 5, 2000, he was beatified at Saint Peter's Square in Rome, Italy.

Blessed Nicholas Bunkerd Kitbamrung's life serves as a profound example of unwavering faith, commitment to the Gospel, and selfless service to others, even in the face of persecution and suffering. His legacy continues to inspire and guide believers around the world.
