Biografía

Blessed Octavia Iglesias Blanco, also known as Blessed Octavia, was a lay woman in the diocese of Astorga, Spain. She was born on 30 November 1894 in Astorga, a city in the province of León, Spain. Octavia dedicated her life to caring for others as a Red Cross nurse.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Octavia became a victim of the violence that engulfed the nation. She was tragically raped and murdered on 28 October 1936, near Pola de Somiedo in the region of Asturias, Spain. She was shot around noon in a field, and her body was buried in a mass grave near the site of the execution.

Years later, in 1938, Octavia's remains were re-interred in her hometown of Astorga, Spain. However, it was not until 1948 that her body found its final resting place within the cathedral of Astorga. This act of re-interment was done as a testament to her martyrdom and sanctity.

Octavia's selfless service and devotion to her community did not go unnoticed, and her virtuous life was officially recognized and celebrated by the Catholic Church. On 11 June 2019, Pope Francis declared her a martyr, signifying her unwavering faith even in the face of persecution and death.

Her beatification, a significant step towards canonization, took place on 29 May 2021. The beatification ceremony, recognizing her as Blessed Octavia Iglesias Blanco, was presided over by Pope Francis and held at the Cathedral of Santa María in Astorga, Spain.

As a Catholic lay woman, Red Cross nurse, and martyr, Blessed Octavia serves as a shining example of courage, compassion, and faith in the midst of adversity. Her life and sacrifice continue to inspire countless individuals, and she is venerated as a symbol of hope and intercession for those facing hardship and injustice.
