Biografía

Blessed Pal Prennushi, also known as Mati or Mattia, was born on 2 October 1881 in Shkodrô, Albania. He embarked on a path of faith and education, studying in various locations such as Schaz, Austria, Caldaro, Italy, and Grac, Austria. His spiritual journey led him to join the Franciscan Friars Minor, and he was ordained as a priest on 25 March 1904 in Shkodrô.

Throughout his life, Blessed Pal Prennushi dedicated himself to serving the Church and its people in various capacities. He initially served as a parish priest in different locations and then took on the role of Provincial Vicar. His commitment to his faith and the teachings of the Catholic Church was unwavering.

Unfortunately, during a tumultuous period in Albania's history, Communist authorities came into power and sought to establish a state-controlled "church." Despite the pressure to conform, Blessed Pal Prennushi remained steadfast in his loyalty to Rome and refused to cooperate with the new regime.

As a consequence of his unwavering stance, he was arrested by Communist authorities on 15 November 1946 in Shkodrô. Following his arrest, he was subjected to a show trial, where his faith and commitment to the Church were put on trial. Despite the unjust proceedings, Blessed Pal Prennushi remained resolute, never renouncing his beliefs.

Tragically, on 11 March 1948, he was executed by firing squad in Shkodrô for his refusal to compromise his fidelity to Rome. His martyrdom was a powerful testimony to his deep faith and his unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church.

Finally, on 26 April 2016, Pope Francis officially recognized the martyrdom of Blessed Pal Prennushi, declaring him venerable. His beatification followed on 5 November 2016, with a ceremony held at the Square of the Cathedral of Shôn Shtjefnit in Shkodôr, Albania. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, further honoring the inspiring life and sacrifice of Blessed Pal Prennushi.

Blessed Pal Prennushi continues to be revered and celebrated as a martyr who stood firm in the face of persecution, upholding the truth and principles of his Catholic faith. His life serves as a shining example of dedication, courage, and devotion, inspiring countless believers around the world.
