Beato Pascual Torres Lloret

Blessed Pascual Torres Lloret, also known as Pasquale Torres Lloret, was born on 23 January 1885 in the town of Carcaixent, located in Valencia, Spain. He came from a humble background, born into a poor family. At the tender age of two days, Pascual was baptized, marking the beginning of his lifelong commitment to the Catholic faith.

Throughout his life, Pascual worked as a manufacturer and builder. On 5 October 1911, he joined in holy matrimony with Leonor Pérez Canet, and together they were blessed with the gift of five children. Pascual was a man deeply devoted to his family, providing for them with unwavering love and care.

Additionally, Pascual was an active member of Catholic Action, an organization dedicated to promoting the Catholic faith and engaging laypeople in various forms of Christian service.

During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, civil authorities forcibly closed churches, suppressing the Catholic faith. In the face of this religious persecution, Pascual played a significant role in preserving the sanctity of the Holy Eucharist. He courageously safeguarded the reserved Eucharist in his own home, protecting this sacred symbol of Christ's presence.

Pascual's fidelity to his faith and his unwavering support for the Church's mission led to his arrest not once, but four times. Despite facing persecution and danger, he remained steadfast in his commitment to Catholicism.

Tragically, Pascual met a martyr's fate when he was shot by a firing squad just after midnight on 6 September 1936, in the cemetery of Carcaixent, Valencia. His lifeless body was then callously thrown into a common grave at the scene. However, after the war, Pascual's remains were transferred and re-buried in a private grave in Valencia.

In recognition of his unyielding faith and ultimate sacrifice, Pope John Paul II decreed Pascual Torres Lloret a martyr and bestowed upon him the title of "Blessed" on 18 December 2000. His beatification ceremony, a significant acknowledgment of his sanctity and exemplary life, took place on 11 March 2001, again officiated by Pope John Paul II.

The life of Blessed Pascual Torres Lloret serves as a powerful testament to his ardent devotion to his family, his unwavering faith in Catholicism, and his willingness to lay down his life in defense of religious freedom. Today, he is venerated as a martyr, an inspiration to all those who seek to follow in his footsteps of profound commitment to God and love for humanity.
