Beato Paulus Yun Yuil

Blessed Paulus Yun Yuil was a layman born in Yeoju, Geonggi-do, South Korea in 1760. Not much is known about his early life and background. He lived during a time when Christianity was suppressed in Korea, and Catholics faced severe persecution for their faith. Despite the risks involved, Paulus Yun Yuil deeply embraced his Christian beliefs and actively participated in the growing Catholic community.

Paulus Yun Yuil lived in the apostolic vicariate of Korea, where he worked as a layman. He dedicated himself to assisting the spread of the Catholic faith and supporting the missionaries who were present in the region. One of the missionaries he served was Blessed Iacobus Chu Mun-mo, who was also martyred for his faith.

During this period, the Korean government implemented a crackdown on Catholics, viewing the growing community as a threat to the state. Catholics were pressured to renounce their faith or face persecution and even death. However, Paulus Yun Yuil remained steadfast in his devotion to Catholicism and courageously faced the dangers that awaited him.

On June 28, 1795, Paulus Yun Yuil was arrested in Seoul, South Korea, along with several other Catholics. He refused to renounce his faith and was subsequently martyred for his refusal to abandon his beliefs. He bravely accepted his fate and embraced his suffering as a witness to his unwavering loyalty to the Catholic Church.

Blessed Paulus Yun Yuil's feast day is commemorated on June 28, the day he was martyred, as well as on September 20, alongside other Korean Martyrs. His courageous witness to the Catholic faith and his willingness to sacrifice his life for what he believed in have made him a revered figure among the faithful.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Paulus Yun Yuil venerable on February 7, 2014, signifying that he lived a life of heroic virtue. Subsequently, on August 15, 2014, Pope Francis beatified Paulus Yun Yuil, officially recognizing him as Blessed Paulus Yun Yuil. His beatification serves as an inspiration for Catholics around the world and particularly in Korea, reminding them of the importance of their faith and the sacrifices that have been made by their predecessors.
