Beato Sante Spessotto

Blessed Sante Spessotto, also known as Cosma Spessotto and Cosme Spessotto Zamuner, was born on 28 January 1923 in Mansué, Treviso, Italy, to peasant parents Vittorio Spessotto and Josefina Zamuner. At the tender age of two days, he was baptized and grew up in a devout Catholic family. From the age of ten, Sante felt a calling to the priesthood and focused his studies accordingly.

On 3 September 1938, Sante joined the Franciscan Friars Minor in Motta di Livenza, Italy. His novitiate began on 16 September 1939, in Vincenza, Italy, where he took the name Cosma. On 17 September 1940, after completion of his novitiate, he made his first vows and continued his studies. Sante made his solemn profession on 19 March 1944, further solidifying his commitment to the Franciscan order.

During World War II, Sante faced a challenging ordeal when he had to undergo surgery for an ulcer. With anesthesia unavailable due to the war, he displayed remarkable courage, enduring the surgery while holding a crucifix in one hand and the hand of a nurse in the other.

After his ordination as a priest on 27 June 1948, Sante expressed a desire to serve as a missionary in China. However, due to strong objections from his family regarding the Communist-controlled country, he withdrew this request. Undeterred, Sante offered himself for missions in Africa, but the Franciscan Friars assigned him, along with two companions, to work as a missionary in El Salvador instead. They arrived in El Salvador on 4 April 1950.

During his time in El Salvador, Sante became a vocal advocate against the violence and injustices perpetrated by the military dictatorship that took control of the country on 15 October 1979. He fearlessly spoke out against these egregious acts, standing up for the oppressed and marginalized.

On 14 June 1980, as Sante was about to celebrate Mass in the church of San Juan Bautista in San Juan Nonualco, Zacatecoluca, he was tragically murdered in his own church. His unwavering commitment to his faith and the pursuit of social justice led to his martyrdom.

Sante Spessotto was venerated by Pope Francis on 26 May 2020, with a decree of martyrdom. Furthermore, on 22 January 2022, Pope Francis officiated Sante's beatification at the Plaza Divino Salvador del Mundo in San Salvador, El Salvador. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Gregorio Rosa Chávez.

Blessed Sante Spessotto's life serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication to God, his selfless service as a Franciscan Friar, and his tireless defense of the marginalized and oppressed. His sacrifice and martyrdom provide inspiration to all who strive for justice and the principles of Christianity.
