Biografía

Blessed Teresa Kwon Cheonrye, born in 1784 in Yanggeun, Gyeonggi, South Korea, was a revered figure in the Catholic Church as a married lay woman and martyr. As a devout Catholic, she lived during a time when Christianity was facing persecution in Korea.

Teresa Kwon Cheonrye was a woman of great faith and deep devotion to God. She embraced the teachings of the Catholic Church and became an active member of the archdiocese of Seoul. Despite being married, she dedicated herself to her spiritual life and nurtured her relationship with God.

During the early 19th century, the Joseon Dynasty in Korea sought to suppress the spread of Catholicism, viewing it as a foreign influence that threatened traditional Confucian values. Christians were often targeted and persecuted, with many facing imprisonment, torture, and even death for their faith.

In the face of such persecution, Teresa Kwon Cheonrye bravely continued to practice her faith and openly profess her belief in Christianity. She was known for her unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church and her willingness to share the Gospel with others.

However, her devotion to her faith eventually caught the attention of the authorities. Teresa Kwon Cheonrye was arrested and imprisoned for her refusal to renounce her Christian beliefs. Despite facing intense pressure and torture, she refused to waver in her faith, remaining steadfast until the end.

On August 3, 1819, Teresa Kwon Cheonrye's life came to a tragic end in Seoul, South Korea, as she was executed for her unwavering commitment to her Catholic faith. Her martyrdom served as a testament to her deep love for God and her uncompromising dedication to her beliefs.

It wasn't until February 7, 2014, that Pope Francis officially recognized Teresa Kwon Cheonrye's martyrdom, decreeing her veneration. Later, on August 16, 2014, she was beatified by Pope Francis, earning the title of "Blessed."

Blessed Teresa Kwon Cheonrye's story continues to inspire and resonate with Catholics worldwide. Her sacrifice reminds us of the importance of standing up for one's faith in the face of adversity, while her unwavering commitment serves as a powerful example of the power of God's love in our lives.
