Beato Tomás de Zumárraga Lazcano

Blessed Tomás De Zumárraga Lazcano, also known as Tomás of the Holy Spirit or Thomas, was a Dominican priest and missionary to Japan. He was born on 10 March 1577 in Vitoria, Spain.

Tomás De Zumárraga Lazcano dedicated his life to serving God and spreading the Catholic faith. He joined the Dominican order and became a priest, recognizing the calling to bring the message of Jesus to far-off lands. With great zeal and devotion, Tomás set his sights on Japan, a country he viewed as fertile ground for evangelization.

In the early 17th century, Japan was mostly closed off to foreigners and suspicious of foreign influences. However, this did not deter Tomás De Zumárraga Lazcano from embarking on his missionary journey. Alongside his fellow Dominican brethren, he ventured to the distant land of Japan, determined to bring the light of Christ to its people.

Tomás faced numerous challenges in his missionary work, not only due to the cultural and linguistic barriers but also because of the prevailing anti-Christian sentiment within Japanese society. Despite these obstacles, he fearlessly preached the Gospel and tirelessly worked to establish Christian communities.

Unfortunately, Tomás De Zumárraga Lazcano's efforts to spread the faith eventually caught the attention of the ruling authorities. In 1622, he was arrested in Omura, Nagasaki, Japan, along with several other missionaries. Accused of spreading a foreign religion and undermining the traditional Japanese way of life, Tomás and his companions were sentenced to death.

On 12 September 1622, Tomás De Zumárraga Lazcano was martyred, being burned alive for his unwavering faith. His martyrdom was a testament to his deep commitment to Christ and his mission to bring salvation to the people of Japan, even at the cost of his own life.

Recognizing his immense sacrifice and devotion, Pope Pius IX proclaimed Tomás De Zumárraga Lazcano as blessed on 7 May 1867 and later venerated him on 26 February 1866 with a decree of martyrdom. His feast day is celebrated on 12 September.
