Biografía

Blessed Vasile Aftenie, also known as Blessed Vasile Aftenie, was born on June 14, 1899 in Lodroman, Valea Lungã, Alba, Romania. He lived during a tumultuous period in history, marked by World War I and the rise of communism in Romania. Despite the challenges he faced, Blessed Vasile remained steadfast in his faith and dedication to serving God.

After being drafted into the army in 1917, Blessed Vasile fought in the front lines in Galicia and Italy during World War I. However, his experiences in the war led him to reflect on the purpose of his life, and in 1919, he made the decision to pursue the priesthood. He subsequently began studying theology at the Pontifical Greek College of Saint Athanasius, where he deepened his understanding of the Catholic faith.

On January 1, 1926, Vasile Aftenie was ordained a priest in the Romanian Greek-Catholic rite in Fagaras si Alba Iulia, Romania. His dedication and knowledge earned him various teaching positions, first at the Theological Academy in Blaj from 1926 to 1934, then as the Dean of the seminary in Bucharest in 1934. In 1937, he became a cathedral canon in Blaj, and in 1939, he was appointed as the Rector of the Theological Academy.

Recognizing his leadership and spiritual qualities, Pope Pius XII appointed Vasile Aftenie as the auxiliary bishop of Fagaras si Alba Iulia and Titular Bishop of Ulpiana on April 12, 1940. He also assumed the role of Apostolic Administrator of Fagaras si Alba Iulia on June 15, 1941. As a bishop, Blessed Vasile tirelessly advocated for the rights and freedom of the Catholic Church in Romania.

However, his unwavering commitment to his faith and refusal to align himself with the Communist regime led to his arrest on October 28, 1948, during the Communist persecutions. He was initially imprisoned in the Dragoslavele work camp before being transferred to solitary confinement in the Caldarusani monastery outside Bucharest in February 1949. Here, he endured a year of repeated torture, which resulted in severe physical and mental injuries. Despite the immense suffering he endured, Blessed Vasile's faith never wavered.

Blessed Vasile Aftenie died on May 10, 1950, in the prison hospital in Vacaresti, Bucharest, as a result of the abuse from the repeated torture sessions. The Communist authorities, seeking to erase his memory, ordered his body to be burned. However, his remains were buried in the Bellu Cemetery in Bucharest, where a white marble grave stone was erected over his grave in 1990. Over time, his grave has become a site of pilgrimage, representing his enduring impact on the faithful.

In recognition of his martyrdom and unwavering devotion to his faith, Pope Francis declared Vasile Aftenie venerable on March 19, 2019. Soon after, on June 2, 2019, Pope Francis beatified him, acknowledging his sainthood. The beatification recognition was celebrated at the Câmpia LibertƒÉ»õii in Blaj, Romania, honoring his legacy and the sacrifice he made for his belief in God. Blessed Vasile Aftenie serves as an inspiring example of steadfast faith and courage in the face of persecution.
