Saint Daniele Comboni

Daniele Comboni, MCCJ (15 March 1831 – 10 October 1881), was an Italian Catholic prelate who dedicated his life to missionary work and social justice in Africa. Born in Verona, Italy, Comboni studied under Nicola Mazza, becoming a multi-linguist proficient in several languages. His commitment to serving the African continent led him to vow to join the missions at age 28 but did not materialize until 1857 when he traveled to Sudan. Throughout his life, Comboni traversed back and forth between Africa and Italy, founding both the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus and the Comboni Missionary Sisters. He also worked tirelessly to raise funds for the poor in Africa, traveling extensively across Europe from 1865 until mid-1865. In 1877, he was appointed as a bishop, which enhanced his ability to establish branches of his order in Khartoum and Cairo among other locations. Comboni’s efforts were recognized by the Church with his beatification on March 17, 1996, and canonization on October 5, 2003.

Comboni is venerated as a patron of missionaries and social justice. In art, he is often depicted wearing bishop's vestments and holding a cross or book, symbolizing his dedication to the Church and its mission in Africa. He is also known by several titles, including 'Apostle of Africa' and 'Father of Missionaries'.
