San Juan Bautista Zhu Wurui

Saint Ioannes Baptista Zhu Wurui, also known as John Baptist Zhou Wurui or Ruohan, was a young layman born around 1883 in Zhujiahe, Jingxian, Hebei, China. He lived during a tumultuous period in Chinese history, marked by the outbreak of the Boxer Rebellion. As a teenager, John Baptist Zhu found himself living in the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China. It was during this time that he publicly declared his Christian faith, a decision that would ultimately lead to his martyrdom. Despite the dangers and risks involved, John firmly stood by his beliefs and refused to renounce his Christianity. Tragically, the Boxer Rebellion, an anti-foreign and anti-Christian movement, targeted Christians and missionaries, seeking to eradicate them from China. In the face of this violent opposition, Saint Ioannes Baptista Zhu Wurui fearlessly held on to his faith. On July 19, 1900, at the young age of seventeen, John Baptist Zhu was captured by the rebels in Lujiazhuang, Jingxia, Hebei. The rebels subjected him to brutal torture, mutilating him and ultimately beating him to death with an ax. His martyrdom was a testament to his unwavering devotion to Christ. Recognizing the heroic virtues exhibited by Saint Ioannes Baptista Zhu Wurui, the Catholic Church officially declared him a martyr. On February 22, 1955, Pope Pius XII issued a decree of martyrdom, acknowledging his supreme sacrifice for the Christian faith. Furthermore, on April 17, 1955, Pope Pius XII beatified him, recognizing his beatific status in heaven. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Ioannes Baptista Zhu Wurui, officially declaring him a saint of the Catholic Church. His canonization served as a testament to his exemplary faith and steadfastness in the face of persecution. As a martyr, Saint Ioannes Baptista Zhu Wurui stands as a shining example of Christian courage and devotion. His life and death inspire believers to remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of adversity. Although there is no specific patronage associated with him, Saint Zhu Wurui remains a powerful intercessor and an inspiration for Christians around the world.
