San Landericus de Soignies

Saint Landericus of Soignies, also known as Landericus of Meaux, Landry of ..., Landricus of ..., Landrich of ..., or Landerico of ..., was born in France, the eldest son of Saint Madelgarus and Saint Waldetrudis. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he was deeply influenced by his parents' strong faith. Landericus began his life as a soldier, but his deep desire for a life of service to God led him to eventually become a priest. He distinguished himself by his piety, wisdom, and commitment to the Gospel message. Recognizing his potential, Landericus was appointed as the Bishop of Meaux in France in the year 641. As bishop, he worked tirelessly to promote the Christian faith and to care for the spiritual needs of his flock. During his tenure as bishop, Landericus demonstrated great compassion for the poor and marginalized. He used his position to advocate for justice and to provide for those in need. Landericus was not only a spiritual leader but also a practical one, as he organized initiatives to assist the less fortunate, including establishing soup kitchens and alms houses. In addition to his duties as bishop, Landericus also felt called to the monastic life. He became a Benedictine abbot in Soignies, Belgium, where he continued to inspire others through his devotion and humility. Later, he served as the abbot of Hautmont, France, furthering the growth and development of monastic communities. Saint Landericus of Soignies is often depicted in art as a bishop holding a book and a razor, symbolizing his role as a bishop and his tonsure. Additionally, he is sometimes portrayed alongside his father, Saint Vincent Madelgaire, highlighting their shared dedication to the faith. Saint Landericus passed away in the 7th century in Soignies, France, peacefully succumbing to natural causes. His relics now rest in the Church of Saint-Vincent in Soignies, where he is venerated by many faithful followers. While he was not formally canonized, Saint Landericus is recognized as a saint by tradition and devotion, with his feast day celebrated on April 17th. Although Saint Landericus of Soignies does not have any specific patronage assigned to him, his life of virtue and selflessness serves as an inspiration to all believers.
