San Litard de Corneto

Saint Litard of Corneto, also known as Litardo or Lituardo, was a 12th century pilgrim who is revered as a patron saint of Corneto (modern Tarquinia), Italy. Born in the area of modern Germany, he embarked on a pilgrimage to various holy places, including Rome, Italy. During his return journey from Rome, Litard passed through Corneto where he sadly succumbed to natural causes and died. Even before his passing, the local people recognized him as a holy man and held great reverence for him. They took him into their hearts, and devotion to him began to spread quickly in the town. By February 1221, a church dedicated to Saint Litard was established, possibly built over his tomb, recognizing the impact he had on the community. The establishment of the church signifies the deep devotion and belief the people had in him, and he became the beloved patron saint of Corneto. Although there is not much information available about Saint Litard's life and specific accomplishments, his status as a saint before the formal process of canonization indicates the widespread belief in his holiness and intercessory power. His sanctity was acknowledged without the need for a formal investigation into his life and miracles. Saint Litard's feast day is celebrated on July 12th annually. During an inventory conducted on August 22, 1446, some relics of Saint Litard were discovered and enshrined in a crystal case in the cathedral of Santa Maria Margherita in Corneto. These relics serve as a physical reminder of his connection to the town and his ongoing presence in the lives of the faithful. Despite the limited historical information available about Saint Litard, his role as a pilgrim, his impact on the people of Corneto, and his enduring veneration make him a significant figure in the local religious tradition.
