San Luigi Versiglia

Saint Luigi Versiglia, also known as Aloisius Versiglia, was born on 5 June 1873 in Oliva Gessi, Padua, Lombardy, Italy. At the age of 12, he entered Don Bosco's Oratory and began his studies there. He joined the Salesian order and was ordained as a priest on 21 December 1895. In 1906, Father Luigi embarked on a missionary journey to China. He dedicated himself to spreading the teachings of Christ and serving the Chinese people. His zeal and commitment led to him being appointed as the vicar apostolic of Shiuchow, China, and titular bishop of Carystus on 22 April 1920. On 25 February 1930, tragedy struck while Saint Luigi was traveling with another saintly companion, Saint Callistus Caravario. Their ship was boarded by Bolshevik pirates who planned to abduct and enslave the girls on board. Recognizing the grave danger, Saint Luigi and Saint Callistus courageously fought to prevent the pirates from carrying out their sinister plans. Unfortunately, their heroic efforts were in vain, as they were both ultimately shot and killed. Saint Luigi Versiglia, along with Saint Callistus Caravario, became known as one of the Martyrs of China. Their martyrdom serves as a testament to their unwavering faith and devotion to the Gospel. Saint Luigi's feast days are celebrated on 25 February and 13 November by the Salesian order. Additionally, he is honored on 28 September as one of the Martyrs of China. Recognizing the sanctity and sacrifice of Saint Luigi Versiglia, Pope Paul VI declared him venerable on 13 November 1976 through a decree of martyrdom. Further recognition came on 15 May 1983 when he was beatified by Pope John Paul II. Finally, on 1 October 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Luigi Versiglia, acknowledging him as a saint of the Catholic Church. While there is no specific patronage associated with Saint Luigi, his life of missionary work and martyrdom can serve as an inspiration and intercession for those who seek guidance and strength in their own missionary endeavors.
