San Margarito Floresgarcía

Saint Margarito Floresgarcía, born on 22 February 1899 in Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico, was a devoted Catholic priest who dedicated his life to serving the people of God. He is also known as "Saint Margarito" and is honored as a martyr, having been executed for the crime of priesthood during the tumultuous years of the Mexican Revolution. Margarito Floresgarcía was ordained as a priest for the diocese of Chilpancingo in Mexico and was assigned to serve in the parish in Atenango del Rio. It was a time of great social and political upheaval in the country, and many priests were targeted by anti-Catholic factions. Despite the dangers, Father Margarito fearlessly carried out his pastoral duties, providing spiritual guidance to the faithful and offering the sacraments. In 1927, Father Margarito was arrested by government authorities on account of his priesthood. He was imprisoned as a result of his refusal to renounce his faith and abandon his vocation. Despite facing the threat of severe punishment, Father Margarito remained steadfast and continued to minister to his fellow prisoners, offering them comfort and hope in their difficult circumstances. Tragically, on 12 November 1927, Father Margarito was taken to Tulimán, Guerrero, where he was executed by a firing squad. He bravely met his end, fulfilling his commitment to his faith and his priesthood. The shot to the head put an end to his earthly life, but his courageous witness left an indelible mark on the hearts of the faithful and the Church. Recognizing his heroic martyrdom, Pope John Paul II declared Father Margarito Floresgarcía venerable on 7 March 1992, acknowledging his selfless sacrifice for the faith. Later that year, on 22 November 1992, he was beatified by the same pope, who saw fit to uplift him as an example of virtue and sanctity. Finally, on 21 May 2000, during the Great Jubilee Year, Pope John Paul II canonized Father Margarito Floresgarcía, officially proclaiming him a saint of the Catholic Church. His canonization highlighted his unwavering commitment to his priesthood and his sacrifice for the Gospel, thus inspiring countless individuals to live out their faith with the same zeal and dedication. Though not associated with any particular patronage, Saint Margarito Floresgarcía stands as a model of faith, courage, and martyrdom. His feast days are celebrated on 12 November, the day of his execution, and 21 May, as one of the Martyrs of the Mexican Revolution. Saint Margarito Floresgarcía's life and martyrdom serve as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the willingness to lay down one's life for the sake of the Gospel.
