Biografía

Saint Maria Goretti, also known as "nan," was a beautiful and pious farm girl born on October 16, 1890, in Corinaldo, Ancona, Italy. She was one of six children born to Luigi Goretti and Assunta Carlini. In 1896, the Goretti family moved to Ferriere di Conca, but tragedy struck when Maria's father died of malaria. Forced to find a means of survival, the family moved onto the Serenelli farm. On July 5, 1902, when Maria was just twelve years old, she experienced a horrific event that would eventually lead to her martyrdom. Alessandro Serenelli, a nineteen-year-old farmhand, attacked Maria and attempted to rape her. However, Maria resisted, fought back, and exclaimed that what he was trying to do was a sin and that he would go to hell. In a desperate attempt to silence her, Alessandro choked and stabbed her fourteen times. Maria was rushed to the hospital, where she clung to life for two days. Despite the immense suffering she endured, Maria forgave her attacker and even asked God's forgiveness for him. In her final moments, she held a crucifix and a medal of Our Lady, showing her unyielding faith and devotion. Maria died on July 6, 1902, at the age of twelve. Following her death, Alessandro Serenelli was imprisoned for his heinous crime. However, while in prison, he experienced a remarkable vision of Maria. He saw a garden where a young girl, dressed in white, gathered lilies. With a gentle smile, she approached him and encouraged him to accept an armful of lilies. As Alessandro took the lilies, each one transformed into a still white flame. This vision of Maria deeply touched Alessandro's heart, leading to his conversion. He later testified on behalf of Maria's cause for beatification. The process of recognizing Maria as a martyr began, and on March 25, 1945, Pope Pius XII declared her venerable. Her beatification followed on April 27, 1947, and ultimately, she was canonized on June 24, 1950, by Pope Pius XII. Maria's canonization ceremony was attended by an impressive crowd of 250,000 people, including her mother, making it a significant and memorable event. Saint Maria Goretti became known as the patron saint against poverty, the death of parents, children, girls, martyrs, poor people, rape victims, and young people in general. She is also recognized as the patroness of the Children of Mary. Furthermore, she is the patron saint of Albano, Italy, and its diocese, as well as Albano Laziale, Italy, and Latina, Italy. Maria's life and martyrdom serve as an inspiration to many, demonstrating the strength of faith, forgiveness, and purity. Her unwavering devotion and remarkable ability to forgive her attacker have touched the hearts of countless individuals. Saint Maria Goretti remains an enduring symbol of strength and divine grace, continuing to inspire and intercede for those in need.
