Santa María Sultaneh Danil Ghattas

Saint Mariam Sultaneh Danil Ghattas, also known as Marie-Alphonsine Danil Ghattas, Maryam Sultanah Danil Ghattas, and Maria Alfonsina Danil Ghattas, was born on 4 October 1843 in Jerusalem. At the tender age of 14, she joined the Congregation of Saint Joseph of the Apparition, expressing her deep commitment to the Catholic faith. In 1866, while residing in Bethlehem, Mariam Sultaneh had a divine encounter with the Blessed Virgin Mary. This vision inspired her to co-found the Rosary Sisters, officially known as the Sisters of the Holy Rosary of Jerusalem of the Latins, or the Congregation of the Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of Jerusalem. The order primarily focused on serving the poor and providing education to Palestinian Christians. Mariam Sultaneh dedicated her life to this mission, tirelessly working to uplift the marginalized and strengthen the faith of the local community. Known for her deep spirituality and unwavering dedication to God, Mariam Sultaneh lived an exemplary life, embodying the virtues of love, humility, and selflessness. She strived to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, practicing the teachings of the Catholic Church and promoting unity and peace among people of different backgrounds. Mariam Sultaneh's efforts in promoting education and faith made a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals. Her work continues through the Sisters of the Holy Rosary of Jerusalem, who have carried on her legacy of service and devotion. Following her death on 25 March 1927 in Ain Karim, Jerusalem, Saint Mariam Sultaneh Danil Ghattas began to be recognized for her profound holiness. On 15 December 1994, Pope John Paul II declared her venerable, recognizing her heroic virtues and the impact she had on the Catholic community. This declaration marked an important step towards her formal recognition as a saint. On 22 November 2009, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Saint Mariam Sultaneh Danil Ghattas at the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. The beatification ceremony, led by Cardinal Angelo Amato, acknowledged her extraordinary life and her contribution to the Catholic Church. Finally, on 17 May 2015, Pope Francis canonized Saint Mariam Sultaneh Danil Ghattas, elevating her to the highest honor within the Catholic Church. Her canonization formally recognized her sanctity, affirming her as a saint and a role model for Catholics around the world. Although Saint Mariam Sultaneh Danil Ghattas does not have a designated patronage, her life and actions continue to inspire people to live a life of service, compassion, and devotion to God.
