San Miguel Garicoïts

Saint Michael Garicoïts was born on 15 April 1797 in Ibarre, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France, to a humble family of Pyrenean peasants. His parents, Arnold and Gratianne Garicoïts, were devout Catholics who sheltered priests escaping the persecutions of the French Revolution. From a young age, Michael felt called to the priesthood, but his family's poverty made it difficult for them to provide him with a proper education. It was his grandmother who arranged for Michael to work in the parish rectory, and later in the kitchen of the bishop of Bayonne, in exchange for his education. Michael's hard work and dedication paid off, as he studied philosophy at Aire, France, and then pursued theology in the major seminary at Dax, France. He was ordained as a priest in the diocese of Bayonne in December 1823, fulfilling his childhood dream. Father Michael Garicoïts was assigned as a parish priest in Cambo, where he became known for his efforts against Jansenism. He promoted frequent communion and encouraged devotion to the Sacred Heart, thus combating the heretical teachings and practices associated with Jansenism. His commitment to combating Jansenism extended beyond the parish level. Father Michael was appointed as a professor of philosophy at the diocesan seminary in Lestelle-Bétharram, France. During his time there, he also served as the rector of the seminary. One of his significant accomplishments was his collaboration with Saint Jeanne Elizabeth des Bichier des Anges in founding the Daughters of the Cross, also known as the Sisters of Saint Andrew the Apostle. This religious congregation was dedicated to serving the poor, sick, and elderly. In 1838, Father Michael Garicoïts founded the Missioner Priests of the Sacred Heart of Bétharram, commonly known as the Bétharram Fathers. This missionary order sought to spread the love of Christ and the Gospel through their apostolic work. Throughout his life, Saint Michael Garicoïts displayed exceptional virtue and holiness. He was recognized for his heroic virtues, and on 10 December 1916, Pope Benedict XV declared him venerable. On 10 May 1923, Pope Pius XI beatified Father Michael Garicoïts, acknowledging his incredible sanctity and the impact of his missionary work and educational efforts. Finally, on 6 July 1947, Pope Pius XII canonized Father Michael, recognizing him officially as a saint of the Catholic Church. Though he is not associated with any specific patronage, Saint Michael Garicoïts serves as a beautiful example of perseverance, selflessness, and dedication to the service of God and his people. Saint Michael Garicoïts is remembered and celebrated on his feast day, which is observed on 14 May each year. He died on this day in 1863 in Bétharram, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France, due to natural causes.
