Biografía

Saint Secundus of Asti, also known as Secondo di Asti, was born into a noble family in Asti, Italy. He belonged to the patrician class and was raised with a privileged upbringing. As a young man, he joined the imperial Roman army and served as a subaltern officer, a low-ranking position which suggests his youth and inexperience. At some point during his military service, Secundus encountered the teachings of Christianity and embraced the faith. He was eventually baptized in Milan, Italy, a significant center for Christian communities during that time. Inspired by his newfound faith, Secundus undertook a courageous act. He provided a Christian burial to the martyr Saint Marcian of Tortona, who had been denied a proper burial due to his beliefs. This action was illegal under the Roman authorities' strict persecution of Christians. Fearing the consequences of his actions, Secundus fled to his family in Asti, seeking their protection. However, his refuge was short-lived as he was eventually discovered and arrested by the Roman authorities. Upon his arrest, Secundus endured severe torture but remained steadfast in his commitment to his Christian beliefs. Despite the pain and suffering inflicted upon him, Secundus refused to renounce his faith. As a result, he was sentenced to death and beheaded in Asti, Italy, around the year 119. His martyrdom became a testament to his unwavering devotion to Christianity. Following his execution, the relics of Saint Secundus were laid to rest in the cathedral of Asti. Over time, a large market developed around the cathedral, and a tradition of patronage towards bankers and merchants by Saint Secundus emerged. He became known as the patron saint of bankers, merchants, and the city of Asti itself. Throughout the centuries, numerous legends have surrounded the life of Saint Secundus, but it is important to note that these stories are merely fictional accounts. The true essence of Saint Secundus resides in his martyrdom and his heroic commitment to his faith. Saint Secundus is often depicted as a soldier holding a miniature representation of the town of Asti in Italy. He is portrayed as a young soldier, sometimes on horseback and sometimes with a banner, adorned in the period attire of the artist rather than reflecting his actual appearance. Another common representation shows him receiving a palm of martyrdom from an angel. Additionally, there are depictions of Saint Secundus alongside the Theban Legion, highlighting the broader context of his faith during a time when Christians faced persecution. Saint Secundus of Asti is honored on various feast days. His primary feast day is celebrated on 30 March. In the past, 29 March was also recognized as his feast day specifically in Asti, Italy, until the 15th century. Additionally, the first Tuesday in May serves as a special day of devotion for Saint Secundus in Asti, Italy. Furthermore, his relics were translated to Asti on 1 June, commemorating the transfer of his remains to the city. As a patron saint, Saint Secundus intercedes for bankers, merchants, and the Palio di Asti festival. He is also venerated as the patron saint of the city of Asti and the diocese of Asti in Italy. His memory lives on, inspiring the faithful to remain devoted to their beliefs, even in the face of persecution and adversity.
